History & Philosophy
Join us in our 50th year! Founded in 1969 by Diane Callahan, what began as one professional dancer who loves to teach supplementing her income, rapidly grew into a school of the first order, and for Miss Diane, a life-long commitment to share her passion for dance with children. The school is committed to offering a variety of dance classes taught by highly qualified, nurturing instructors. With an unrivalled student-teacher ratio, Gainesville School of Ballet students enjoy an extraordinary level of personal attention. Most children’s classes also include at least one Brenau University dance education major as an assistant.
The school's primary focus is classical ballet including beginning ballet, and creative movement. We also offer tap, jazz, and hip-hop. Students who desire a more rapid progression may enroll in an intensive course of study that will develop the skills, experience, and discipline required to pursue opportunities with the Gainesville Ballet Company, college scholarships and professional careers. The school’s students have become professional dancers, instructors, choreographers, arts administrators, and studio owners. Some have joined the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Feld Ballet, The Atlanta Ballet, and many regional companies throughout the Southeast. While most of the school’s students will not become, nor choose to be, professional dancers; they will learn the art form properly, in a healthy, loving atmosphere -- and have fun doing it!
